The Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, has extended a helping hand to the players and officials of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure, a team in the Nigeria Premier Football League, following a distressing incident.
Last Thursday, the team
encountered armed robbers on the Ore-Benin Highway while en route to Benin City
for an NPFL Match 13 tie against Bendel Insurance. The attack resulted in a
ball boy being shot and left the players and other officials deeply shaken.
Governor Obaseki, known for
his dedication to the well-being of the community, promptly dispatched senior
officials and personal aides to the hospital where the injured ball boy was
receiving treatment, as well as to the traumatized team members.
In a commendable act of
support, Governor Obaseki has offered to cover the medical expenses for all
those affected by this unfortunate incident, showcasing his sincere concern for
the welfare of the sports community.
Acknowledging the governor's
compassionate gesture, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji
Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed gratitude, stating, "We appreciate His
Excellency Mr. Godwin Obaseki for this compassionate act. This commendable move
reflects his nobility, and we deeply value his support. Our thoughts are with
the injured ball boy and the traumatized players and officials, and we wish
them a speedy recovery."
