Éric Sékou Chelle new head coach of the Super Eagles 


The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will officially unveil Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles during an event scheduled for Monday in Abuja. The unveiling will take place in the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola National Stadium at 11 a.m.

Chelle’s appointment, confirmed last Tuesday by the NFF Executive Committee, came on the recommendation of the Technical and Development Committee.

The 47-year-old Franco-Malian coach steps into one of football’s most demanding roles. NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed optimism about Chelle’s ability to inject fresh ideas, energy, and determination as the Super Eagles gear up for their remaining six matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“We recognize Nigerians’ deep passion for football, and we acknowledge the mixed reactions to Coach Chelle’s appointment,” Gusau said. “However, we urge all Nigerians to rally behind him as we firmly believe he possesses the qualities to bring success to the Super Eagles. The NFF will provide all the necessary support to ensure he thrives in this role.”

At the unveiling, the NFF will also reveal the members of Chelle’s coaching team. His crew will initially oversee the Super Eagles B squad during February’s African Nations Championship in East Africa before shifting focus to the World Cup qualifiers. The qualifiers resume in March with matches against Rwanda (away) and Zimbabwe (home).

Chelle, who previously led Mali’s national team to the verge of a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final spot, recently left his position at MC Oran, a prominent Algerian club and 1989 African Champions’ Cup finalists, to take up this new challenge with Nigeria.
