Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed
confidence in Darwin Nunez’s ability to contribute significantly to the team’s
season while reinforcing the importance of maintaining Arne Slot’s high
expectations.
Slot had previously raised concerns about Nunez’s work
ethic following his crucial miss against Aston Villa, which led to the striker
being benched for the clash with Manchester City.
However, Nunez returned to action in Liverpool’s midweek
victory over Newcastle, prompting Van Dijk to reiterate the necessity for every
player to give their all.
“That has been the basic requirement for the entire squad
from the very beginning,” Van Dijk said.
“But playing for Liverpool demands that as a minimum.
It’s ultimately up to him, but he responded well today with his effort and
performance after coming on. That level of commitment should be a given, and he
understands that.”
Van Dijk also emphasized the collective responsibility
within the squad, saying, “I mentioned this after the Aston Villa game—we’re all
in this together, and we need everyone fully engaged. Darwin is an important
part of the team, and when he steps onto the pitch, he must make a positive
impact. That mindset has to continue.”
